At the end of last year I finally decided to tackle the living room, once my room was prepped and ready I started painting the first wall and discovered a patch was just peeling away. It didn't look right but then this is an old house so didn't dwell on it too much. Once the one wall was painted I then noticed a tide mark on the wall in the hallway. So I held fire on the painting as it looked like we had a case of rising damp! Not ideal, and we then had it confirmed by a damp specialist who discovered it was in the living room, hallway and another small study room at the front of the house. This is a picture of the before so quite a bit to do.
It was the original part of the house that was affected so we had to have damp proofing and re-plastering applied to the affected walls. We allowed the walls to dry and put it on the back burner until after Christmas. I've been slowly decorating bit by bit and I'm pleased to have freshened the room up with a shade of white. We've spend so many times rearranging this room and have finally stuck on this layout for the longest. We decided to keep the dining table on one side of the room giving it a purpose rather than an empty space. I've kept the walls white so I could add colour with artwork, furniture and soft furnishings.
There's still a few tweaks to go like painting the skirting board and getting new blinds, but I'm pleased with it. Just have the hallway and the study wall to decorate now!
