How to Shop Your Wardrobe

We now live in a world where circular and slow fashion is on the up and the industry is paying attention to the action needed to help our planet. But there's still a way to go and I hope it’s making more consumers aware of how they spend and what they spend their money on.

One way we can be mindful in the way we shop is by taking a good look at our own wardrobes and taking the time to reinvent some looks and essentially shop your own wardrobe. In a bid to save some money I'm going to try and do this more and have fun creating new looks with what I already have. It can sometimes be all to easy to become consumed by scrolling on Instagram and feeling like you need to buy new continuously, which is not healthy for anyone.

Find inspiration

Take some time to put together a mood board on Pinterest of all the street style looks that inspire you, that make you want wear the same outfit. Then once you have a healthy collection of looks go back to your own wardrobe and see what styles you can recreate.

Start with the basics, of course jeans, white t-shirts an overcoat and a good everyday handbag. These will become the staples of any outfit and you will find you wear these multiple times. Then you can add aspects like signature pieces, accessories and jewellery to add interest to your look.

Don’t save things for best

Try on your favourite or the most wow pieces you own. That dress you wore to a wedding once (unless it was a bridal gown) doesn’t need to be kept for special occasions and actually could look great with a pair of trainers and a denim jacket. Wearing the pieces you have invested in will not only make you appreciate them more but hopefully spark more joy in wearing them, not to mention getting in the cost per wear. Life is too short to save things for best!

Look at lifestyle

It's safe to say my style and taste and lifestyle have changed over the years. Like many of us keeping hold of items you last wore 10 years ago are taking up unnecessary space and it’s unlikely you’re going to wear them again. Any excuse for a good declutter! Sorting through what you still wear regularly and what still fits will allow you to see what gaps are left in your wardrobe. Accept that your personal style is not what it was and you’ve evolved. You want to be able to get dressed with ease and not be fighting your way through clothes that no longer serve you. That way you can decide on what items would be a good investment rather than impulse buying.
